Woo-hoo!

Our offer got accepted - we're home-owners!

Now we're just trying to find temporary housing until closing... appreciate your prayers...

Darn Intake Manifold!

In the midst of packing everything, looking for temporary digs in SC, and bringing closure to things, my darn car's intake manifold goes out - ya, an $800 bill (mostly labor)! Oh well, I still live and swear by Saturn...

An Extension, Not as an Exemption

"Paul will not permit us to compensate for neglecting those nearest us by advertising our compassion for those on another continent. Jesus, it must be remembered, restricted nine-tenths of His ministry to twelve Jews because it was the only way to redeem all Americans. He couldn't be bothered, says Martin Thornton, with the foreign Canaanites because His work was to save the whole world. The check for the starving child must still be written and the missionary sent, but as an extension of what we are doing at home, not as an exemption from it." - Eugene Peterson

All.

I came across this church ad in a newspaper this past Saturday. No joking, here's how this church is marketing itself, word for word (although I'm blanking out the church's name):

At ________ __________ Community Church __________ when we say "Welcome," we don't mean "Tolerated," we mean WELCOME.
All religious beliefs, all ages, all social classes, - folks who need help, folks who give help - people who do not want to simply feel tolerated...but loved.
At ________ __________ Community Church __________, ALL are welcome. Get the picture?
Progressive * Inclusive * Informal * Responsible
OURS IS A WELCOMING HOUSE OF GOD. ALL ARE WELCOME. ALL.

How's that for outreach?!

South Carolina Weekend

My weekend in review:

FRIDAY - We flew out of Detroit to spend some time in our new digs down south in Anderson, South Carolina. Amber enjoyed the underground walk to our terminal (see pic to left) - forget Disney World, she's content to ride the thingys that make you walk fast instead!

After a looooooooong wait in line for our Hertz rental car, we had lunch with Perry. Good times - he's fun to hang out with. He just finished hiring the final paid student ministry staff member - our 8-strong team is complete!

Best moment of the day - I got to spin the money wheel at Shoe Carnival - I won $2 off my shoe purchase!! That one's going down in my Top 5 Moments in Life.

SATURDAY - We ate at the Pizza Buffet. The food actually gives Pizza Hut a run for its money! Also watched breaking news on CNN about the mechanics' strike at NorthWest Airlines and the subsequent 2 emergency landings in Detroit. Spent the evening musing about our Sunday afternoon return flight home to Detroit on NorthWest...

SUNDAY - Went to NewSpring for the 8:30am service. Music was rockin', message from Haggai was sweet and gut-level convicting, and Amber got sticky stuff on her Bible. Also hung out with some of the Executive Staff and heard all about Mud Bowl.

Well, that about sums up our weekend in South Carolina.

Oh ya, and we put in an offer on a house too.

Alright, here's a picture of it:

Boxes Everywhere

That about sums up my life at the moment as we're rapidly packing up for our August 28-30 move to Anderson, South Carolina. (Friends & family wishing to help us pack - email me at kiwimanno (at) gmail (dot) com for details!). Blog updates may be slow the next few days... here's some tidbits to share while I take a break from boxing stuff up:

- Thanks for all your encouraging comments the last few days! Yesterday this blog saw an all-time one-day high of 267 hits - Wow!!

- Tomorrow we fly back to South Carolina to spend some time with Perry, go house-hunting (please keep us in your prayers with this!), and still find time to swing by NewSpring Sunday morning before heading back. This pic was snapped in the airport last week - there were ROCKING CHAIRS in the terminal!

- Next Wednesday through Saturday I'll be in Pennsylvania speaking for a Middle School Summer Camp hosted by Allegheny Center Alliance Church. I'm looking forward to hanging out with some like-minded youth workers and some neat teens.

- Snickers the Wonder Cat is the proud owner of a brand-new kitty bed. We bought it for him today to help with his current state of anxiety. He went nuts in it!

- Last but not least, Amber promised me a new Typepad blog if I found a new position through my blog. So, if I can carve out some time, the new blog will be coming your way in the coming weeks. If anyone's interested in creating a super-sweet header, email me...
